City of Flagstaff Regional Plan Update was looking for a creative way to engage the community in thinking about regional planning issue. The Regional Plan will cover numerous topics and issues, including housing, sustainability, land use and development, natural resources, transportation. It will also discuss the intersections of, and trade-offs between these topics while formulating specific policies to achieve goals within each topic area. As comprehensive and complicated this plan can be the City of Flagstaff Comprehensive Planning Staff initiated the concept of developing art box kits to engage our region’s citizens. BPAC funded the development of the boxes and our planning staff worked with Sonja London-Hall an artist & educator to fully develop the six colorful boxes and providing 6 themed box designs each was themed with a regional plan aspect. Multiples of the themed boxes were produced. Many of the boxes have a primer that includes an awarding children’s book, but the boxes worked just as well for children and for adults. In practice we found the Create Crate Boxes as an extremely effective tool for reaching a wide diversity of people. The boxes contents and instructions make it very easy to produce recognizable art, even for those who do not feel they were artistic. Sitting down and crafting art releases something that is difficult to define that was principally different than some more typical practices used in planning.
